Heating System Monitoring Panel

A fire that went out, a boiler that locked out or a pump that quit shows up as a cold house hours later. Know when it happens, from wherever you are.

Away from the building? For a camp, second home, shop or greenhouse, a freeze alert is often the whole reason to have it.

What it is

A panel, sensors and a phone app

A wall-mounted panel with sensors on your boiler, tanks and piping, and a dashboard on your phone that alerts you when a reading is wrong.

It works with outdoor and indoor wood boilers, solar thermal, oil and gas boilers and storage tanks, in any mix. Sensors strap onto pipes or use existing wells, so nothing in the heating system has to be cut into.

Boiler and tanks

See every temperature

Boiler, storage tank top and bottom, supply and return, and each zone, on one drawing of your own system.

Fire and fuel

Know when the fire is out

A falling supply temperature tells you the wood fire needs loading or the burner did not light.

Freeze protection

Hear before pipes freeze

A room or a pipe heading toward freezing raises an alert while there is still time to act.

Heat use

See what you make and use

With a flow sensor the panel works out the heat going into storage and out to the building.

Standard system

What comes with it

Inclusions

  • Industrial PLC controller
  • Eight temperature sensor inputs, including high-temperature flue probes
  • Inputs for flow and for pump, burner and valve status
  • Cellular connection, no site Wi-Fi needed
  • Battery backup for power-loss alerts
  • Sealed enclosure
  • Private dashboard login for each person you name

Features

  • A drawing of your own system with live readings
  • Alerts to your phone and by email
  • Limits and delays you can change yourself
  • Logged history you can export
  • Panel-offline alert if it stops reporting
  • A copy of your program, with the password

If you want the panel to run pumps, valves, draft fans and the backup burner as well, the control package is built per system and quoted separately.

Alerts

What it tells you, and when

AlertWhat sets it off
Fire out or supply coldSupply temperature below your limit for longer than the delay you set.
Storage tank lowTank temperature drops below the floor you set.
Freeze riskA room, pipe or outdoor loop is close to freezing.
Boiler or tank too hotA temperature goes above its high limit.
Burner lockoutThe backup burner was called and did not light.
Pump stopped or no flowA pump that should be running is not, or the flow has stopped.
Power failureUtility power lost, and again when it returns.
Panel offlineThe panel itself stops reporting.

Limits and delays are set for your system and can be changed at any time.

Our own system

This one is real: it heats our house

We built the first one for ourselves in Bradford, Vermont. It manages an outdoor wood boiler, an indoor wood boiler, a solar array and a gas backup burner feeding three storage tanks and the heating zones.

Live schematic of a home heating system: wood boiler, two storage tanks, solar tube array, outdoor wood boiler, zone pumps and hand-off-auto switches

Our dashboard, live. The outdoor sensors are still being installed, which is why some readings are blank.

What it does for us

  • Shows every tank, loop and zone temperature on a drawing of the system
  • Works out the heat coming in from the wood fire and going out to the house
  • Runs the pumps, valve, draft fans and backup burner, with hand, off and auto for each
  • Lets us change zone setpoints and the fuel mode from a phone

What we have learned from it

  • How much heat the house really uses on a mild night, which was almost none
  • How much is lost from storage and piping, which was more than expected
  • That an alert the moment a probe fails is worth more than a perfect drawing

Common questions

Questions about the heating system monitoring panel

What kinds of heating systems does it work with?

Outdoor and indoor wood boilers, pellet boilers, solar thermal, oil and gas boilers, storage tanks and hydronic zones, in any mix.

Do you have to cut into the piping?

No. Temperature sensors strap onto pipes or use existing wells. A flow sensor is the one part that goes in a pipe, and it is optional.

Can it control the system as well?

Yes. Ours runs the pumps, the valve, the draft fans and the backup burner and lets us change setpoints from a phone. Control is built per system and quoted separately.

Does it replace the boiler's safety controls?

No. High limits, low water cut-offs and the other safety devices stay hardwired and work without the panel.

Does it need the building's internet?

No. The panel carries its own cellular connection.

What does it cost?

A one-time price for the panel and sensors, then a monthly monitoring fee. Both depend on how many points you want watched, so call for a quote.
