If you run refrigerated trucks or trailers, you already know the math on a failed reefer unit is brutal. A unit that quits on the road doesn't just mean a repair bill. It means a load at risk, a driver stuck waiting, a customer calling, and often an emergency call-out at premium rates. A reefer preventive maintenance (PM) contract is how fleet managers and owner-operators get ahead of that failure instead of reacting to it. Northeast Refrigeration Services builds scheduled PM programs for Thermo King and Carrier Transicold transport refrigeration units, sized for fleets running anywhere from 2 to 50 reefers.
What a Reefer PM Contract Actually Covers
A real PM program is engine-hour based, not guesswork. Transport refrigeration units log hours the same way an engine does, and the service intervals follow those hours. On a scheduled visit we work through the items that actually cause breakdowns and lost cooling:
- Engine oil and oil filters on diesel-driven units, changed on the manufacturer's hour interval
- Fuel and air filters to protect the injection system and keep the engine breathing clean
- Belts inspected and replaced before they fray, glaze, or snap
- Coolant checked, tested, and topped or replaced as needed
- Refrigerant charge and full leak check so the unit holds temperature and you stay compliant on refrigerant handling
- Defrost operation verified so coils aren't icing over and killing airflow
- Electrical inspection including contactors, connections, sensors, and control operation
- Structural check of mounts, door seals, hoses, and the unit's physical condition
Every unit gets checked against its own run hours and its own history, not a generic checklist. That's the difference between a PM that catches problems and a PM that just changes oil.
Why Scheduled PM Beats Emergency Repair
The case for a PM contract is practical, not theoretical. Reefer units fail from wear that builds up quietly: a belt that's been slipping, a slow refrigerant leak, a fuel filter that's finally clogged. Almost none of that happens without warning if someone is actually inspecting the unit on a schedule.
Scheduled maintenance gives you fewer roadside failures, because the parts most likely to strand a truck get replaced on time instead of at random. It gives you protected loads, because a unit holding proper charge and clean airflow holds temperature. It gives you longer unit life, because clean oil, good coolant, and correct refrigerant charge are what keep a compressor and diesel engine alive for years instead of seasons. And it gives you predictable budgeting, because you're paying a known monthly figure instead of absorbing surprise emergency invoices at after-hours rates whenever a unit decides to quit.
Emergency repair will always cost more than the same work done on a calm, scheduled visit. A PM contract simply moves the work to the cheaper, planned side of that line.
How Our PM Contracts Are Priced and Scheduled
PM contracts are billed at a flat monthly rate per unit. You know the number up front, it doesn't move with the season, and it makes fleet maintenance a fixed line item instead of a variable one. The rate is set per unit based on the type of reefer, its run hours, and how many units you're enrolling, so a small owner-operator and a mid-size fleet each get pricing that fits.
Contract customers also get priority scheduling. When you're on a PM program, your units come first for both scheduled service and for repair calls when something does come up. That priority is one of the most valuable parts of a contract during busy stretches, when non-contract customers are waiting in line.
Mobile On-Site Service, Wherever Your Trucks Are
All of this happens where your equipment already is. We're a mobile TRU repair operation, so PM visits are done on-site at your yard, terminal, or wherever the units sit. You don't deadhead a truck to a shop and lose a day of revenue moving a trailer back and forth for routine maintenance. We come to the fleet.
Every PM visit is documented. You get records of what was inspected, what was serviced, and what was replaced on each unit, which matters for warranty, for resale, and for any compliance or refrigerant-handling recordkeeping you're responsible for. Over time that history also tells you which units are aging and which are solid, so replacement decisions are based on data instead of hunches.
Northeast Refrigeration Services is an independent, EPA 608 Universal certified mobile reefer shop based in Bradford, Vermont, serving fleets across VT, NH, ME, NY, MA, and CT. We work strictly on the refrigeration and diesel side of Thermo King and Carrier Transicold units, and we're straight with you about what a unit needs and what it doesn't. If you're running reefers and want them on a scheduled PM program, call (802) 243-9373 and we'll build a contract around your fleet.
