Your reefer's display flashes a number, a buzzer sounds, and now you have a load to protect and a decision to make. Alarm codes are the unit telling you exactly what it noticed and, in most cases, how serious it thinks the problem is. Learning to read them is one of the most useful skills a driver or fleet manager can pick up, because it turns a panic moment into a clear next step: keep rolling and schedule service, or shut down now before you turn a small fault into a wrecked engine or compressor.
This guide walks through how Thermo King and Carrier Transicold report alarms, what the severity levels mean, the common categories of faults, and how to view and clear codes safely. One thing up front: exact code meanings vary by unit model and year, and the display manual that came with your specific unit is always the final authority. Use this as a map, not a substitute for that book.
How Thermo King Reports Alarms
Thermo King microprocessor controllers, such as those on SR-2, SR-3, and SLXi units, store faults as numbered alarm codes and rank them by severity. Understanding the severity level matters more than memorizing individual numbers, because the level tells you how much time you have.
- Level 1 alarms are informational. The unit logs the event and keeps running normally. These are the ones you note and mention to your tech at the next service, not the ones you pull over for.
- Level 2 alarms are more serious and often mean a shutdown is pending or that the unit has reduced its capability to protect itself. The reefer may keep running for now, but something needs attention soon.
- Level 3 alarms are the ones that trigger an immediate shutdown. The unit has decided that continuing to run risks real damage to the engine, compressor, or another major component, so it stops itself.
A few Thermo King codes are common enough to be worth knowing by name. Code 17 relates to engine turning (a cranking or start fault), and Code 18 flags high engine coolant temperature. Code 20 covers engine startup and RPM sensing problems, and Code 25 reports a low engine coolant level. Low engine oil pressure is another classic engine-protection shutdown. That said, the exact number tied to a given fault can differ between platforms, so confirm against your unit's manual rather than assuming a code means the same thing on every Thermo King you drive.
How Carrier Transicold Reports Alarms
Carrier Transicold units running the Advance or APX microprocessor also use numbered alarm codes, and they draw a similar line between alarms that let you keep operating and alarms that stop the unit. Carrier generally groups faults as either display-only alarms or shutdown alarms.
- Display alarms announce a problem but let the unit continue running, sometimes in a reduced or protective mode. The controller wants you aware of the issue without sacrificing the load if it can still hold temperature.
- Shutdown alarms stop the engine or refrigeration function to prevent damage, the same principle as a Thermo King Level 3.
On Carrier displays you will often see alarms shown with a code number and a short description, and the manual assigns each a category and a recommended action. Because Carrier has run several controller generations, the same fault condition can appear under different code numbers depending on whether you are looking at an older Advance unit or a newer APX. This is exactly why writing down the code you actually see, rather than a code you half-remember, saves everyone time.
Common Categories of Alarm Codes
Whether you run Thermo King or Carrier, nearly every alarm falls into one of a handful of families. Recognizing the category helps you gauge urgency even before you look up the specific number.
- Sensor and probe faults: a temperature sensor, pressure transducer, or coolant sensor reading out of range, disconnected, or shorted. Many are display-level, but a failed control sensor can cause the unit to misjudge temperature, so they matter for load integrity.
- Refrigeration faults: problems in the cooling circuit itself, such as high or low refrigerant pressure, a suction or discharge pressure out of limits, or a component in the cooling loop not performing. These can range from log-only to shutdown depending on how far out of range the reading is.
- Engine and fuel faults: low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, low coolant level, cranking or RPM problems, and fuel delivery issues. Engine-protection alarms are the ones most likely to force an immediate shutdown, because the unit is guarding its own diesel powerplant.
- Electrical and control faults: low battery voltage, charging problems, sensor wiring faults, or a controller output not responding as expected. Weak batteries and bad grounds are a surprisingly common root cause behind alarms that look like something worse.
Viewing and Clearing Codes on the Display
Both brands let you scroll through active and stored alarms from the front control panel. The general approach is to press the alarm or code button, then use the arrow or scroll keys to step through each stored code. The display shows the code number and usually a brief text description. Take a photo or write down every code you see, in order, before you clear anything.
Clearing is deliberately a separate step. Most controllers require you to first resolve or acknowledge the fault, then confirm the clear command. Here is the part that trips people up: clearing an alarm does not fix the problem. It only erases the record. If the underlying condition is still present, the alarm will come right back, and if it was a shutdown alarm, the unit will shut down again.
Never Just Clear a Shutdown Alarm and Keep Running
This is the most important habit to build. A shutdown alarm, a Thermo King Level 3, or a Carrier shutdown code, means the unit stopped itself on purpose to prevent damage. Clearing it and restarting to buy time is how a low-oil-pressure warning becomes a seized engine, or a high-coolant-temperature alarm becomes a cracked head. The repair bill and the downtime multiply fast.
Display-level alarms give you more room. If the unit is holding temperature and the alarm is informational, it is usually reasonable to finish getting to a safe location or a delivery and then get it looked at promptly. But a shutdown alarm is the unit protecting itself, and overriding that judgment repeatedly almost always costs more than the load you were trying to save. When in doubt, treat a shutdown as a shutdown.
Write the Code Down Before You Call
When you reach a tech, the single most helpful thing you can hand them is the exact alarm code, the unit make and model, and whether the reefer shut down or kept running. That combination lets a good tech arrive with the right parts and skip a lot of guesswork, which shortens the repair and keeps your load closer to temperature.
