It happens when the relationship with an installer ends. The equipment is yours, but the program inside it is locked.
Most PLCs let the programmer set a password that blocks anyone else from reading or changing the program. Some installers lock everything by habit, some to protect their work, and some so that every change has to go through them.
The PLC manufacturer generally will not recover or remove someone else's password, and we do not break passwords. On most controllers, clearing the password also clears the program.
If the program cannot be had, the controller can be reprogrammed from scratch. The wiring, sensors and outputs stay where they are. Someone writes down what the machine does, step by step, and writes a new program to do it. Often the existing PLC can be reused. For a simple machine this is days of work, not weeks.
Put it in the agreement before the work starts: you receive the program file, the password and the documentation when the job is paid for. Every program we write is delivered that way.
Common questions
No. We do not break passwords. We can write a new program for the same hardware that you own outright.
Usually not. If the controller is a current model, it can be cleared and reprogrammed.
