A transport refrigeration unit that holds setpoint on today's run tells you almost nothing about where it will be next week. A reefer is a diesel engine, a full vapor-compression refrigeration circuit, and a control system all bolted together and shaken down the interstate for thousands of hours. Every one of those systems wears in ways you cannot see from the driver's seat. The unit that pulls down fine on an empty deadhead can still be days away from failing under a full load on a 95-degree afternoon. Preventive maintenance is how you find those problems on your schedule instead of the load's schedule.
This is not about selling you service you don't need. It is about the plain economics of running refrigerated freight: a PM visit costs a fraction of one rejected load, and it is the single most reliable way to keep a unit earning instead of sitting.
Why a Reefer That Runs Fine Can Still Be About to Fail
Refrigeration systems degrade slowly and then quit all at once. A unit slowly losing refrigerant through a weeping fitting or a tired compressor shaft seal will hold a light load for weeks because it has excess capacity to spare. Load it with 44,000 pounds of frozen product on a hot day, and suddenly it cannot make the difference. The failure looks sudden. It was not.
The same pattern shows up all over the unit. A serpentine or fan belt gets glazed and starts to slip long before it snaps. Compressor oil breaks down and loses its ability to protect bearings months before you hear a knock. A condenser coil packs with road grime and bugs until head pressure climbs and the unit runs hot every cycle. A defrost sensor drifts out of calibration and lets the evaporator ice over until airflow chokes off. None of these throw an alarm on day one. All of them are obvious to a tech with gauges and a few minutes. That gap, between when a problem starts and when it strands you, is exactly the window preventive maintenance lives in.
What Skipping PM Actually Costs
The maintenance bill is the small number. The real cost of a neglected unit shows up somewhere else:
- Rejected loads. If a receiver's temperature recorder shows the box drifted out of range, the load can be refused at the dock. On produce, pharma, or ice cream, that can be tens of thousands of dollars of product, and it is usually the carrier eating it.
- Roadside downtime. An emergency call-out, after-hours labor, a hot-shot part, and a driver sitting on the clock cost far more than a scheduled PM, and they always happen at the worst possible time and place.
- Cascading damage. A slipping belt that finally lets go can cook an alternator or overheat the engine. A low charge that keeps the compressor starved can destroy the compressor. Small deferred fixes turn into major component failures.
- Shortened unit life. Dirty oil, dirty coils, and running hot age every component faster. A well-maintained unit routinely goes many more seasons than a neglected one before it needs a major overhaul or replacement.
Put simply, PM is not an expense that competes with running the truck. It is what protects the revenue the truck is out there earning.
What a Real PM Inspection Covers
A proper preventive maintenance service on a Thermo King or Carrier Transicold unit is not a quick look and a signature. Done right, it touches both the refrigeration side and the diesel engine that drives it. A thorough PM includes:
- Refrigerant charge and system pressures. Checking discharge and suction pressures against ambient conditions to confirm the charge is correct and there are no restrictions or leaks. A low charge is one of the most common reasons a unit can't hold temperature under load.
- Belts and tensioners. Inspecting for glazing, cracking, and fraying, and setting proper tension. Belts are cheap; the failures they cause are not.
- Compressor oil. Checking level and condition, since degraded or low oil is a direct path to compressor failure.
- Coils and airflow. Cleaning condenser and evaporator coils, including microchannel condensers, and confirming the fans move air freely. Blocked coils drive up head pressure and rob capacity.
- Defrost system. Verifying the defrost cycle initiates and terminates correctly and that sensors read accurately, so the evaporator doesn't ice over and choke airflow.
- Electrical and controls. Inspecting contactors, relays, wiring, and connections for corrosion and pitting, and confirming the microprocessor alarms and sensors report true.
- Engine service. Oil and filter changes, fuel and air filters, coolant condition, glow plugs, and checking for injector, EGR, and general diesel health. The reefer engine runs enormous hours and needs real service, not just top-offs.
- Structure and mounting. Checking mounting bolts, the fuel tank, hoses, and the door seals and box for leaks that make the unit work harder than it should.
Pre-Trip Inspections Are Not the Same as PM
The unit's own pre-trip self-check is a valuable tool and every driver should run it before loading. It exercises the engine, cycles the modes, and flags faults the microprocessor can see. But it has limits. A pre-trip cannot measure your actual refrigerant charge, tell you a belt is glazed, show you an oil-fouled coil, or catch a sensor that reads plausible but wrong. It confirms the unit is functional right now; it does not confirm the unit is healthy. Think of the pre-trip as a driver's daily walkaround and PM as the periodic hands-on service. You need both, and they do different jobs.
How PM Extends the Life of the Unit
Everything on a reefer lasts longer when it runs clean, cool, and correctly charged. Clean coils mean lower head pressure and less strain on the compressor. Fresh oil protects bearings. Correct charge keeps the compressor from running starved and overheating. Good belts keep the alternator and clutch alive. A tuned diesel with clean filters and healthy glow plugs starts easier and burns cleaner, which matters a great deal in a New England winter. Individually these are small things. Together they are the difference between a unit that quietly does its job for years and one that nickel-and-dimes you into an early replacement.
