If your Thermo King or Carrier reefer just threw an alarm, the first question is almost always the same: what is this going to cost me? It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends on the job. But "it depends" is not good enough when you have a loaded trailer and a delivery window. So let us pull the curtain back and walk through exactly how mobile transport-refrigeration-unit (TRU) repair gets priced, what drives the number up or down, and how to think about the real cost of a reefer that is down.
The Building Blocks of a Reefer Repair Bill
Almost every mobile reefer repair invoice is built from the same few pieces. Once you understand them, the total stops feeling like a mystery.
- Labor, billed hourly. This is usually the largest line item. Skilled reefer work is not cheap because the training, EPA certification, and diagnostic tooling behind it are not cheap. Our posted rate is $150 per hour for standard hours and $225 per hour for after-hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Travel, portal to portal. A mobile tech has to physically reach your truck. Reputable shops bill travel at the labor rate from the shop to you and back, which is what "portal to portal" means. The closer you are, the less this costs. A breakdown two hours out costs more in windshield time than one down the road, and that is simply the geography of mobile service.
- The one-hour minimum. Most mobile operations, including ours, have a one-hour labor minimum. Even a five-minute fix required a truck, tools, and a trained tech to roll out. The minimum keeps that trip worth making.
- Parts. Anything from a belt or sensor to a compressor. Part cost varies enormously by component and by whether it is Thermo King, Carrier, or a shared commodity part, so no honest tech will quote you an exact parts figure over the phone before diagnosis.
- Diagnostic time. Finding the fault is part of the work. On a modern microprocessor-controlled unit, pulling codes, checking sensors, and confirming the actual root cause takes real time, and that time is billed like any other labor.
Why a Mobile Call Costs What It Does
People sometimes compare a mobile invoice to a dealer estimate and wonder about the difference. The comparison is not apples to apples. When you drive a unit into a dealer, you are absorbing the cost of getting it there, the downtime while it sits in their queue, and often a shop that is booked days out. A mobile tech reverses that equation: the shop comes to your truck, wherever it sits, often the same day and frequently in the middle of the night.
That convenience has a real cost built into it, primarily the travel and the after-hours availability. But for a working truck, the math frequently favors mobile. A dealer appointment three days from now does not help a load of frozen product today. The premium you pay for a mobile tech is largely a premium on speed and on not having to move a disabled trailer. For a leaking evaporator at 2 a.m. on I-91, that speed is the whole point.
Cost Ranges by Job Type
Without inventing numbers we cannot know for your specific unit, here is how the work sorts out by size. Think of these as tiers of labor and parts, not fixed prices.
Minor jobs. These are the fast ones: a failed sensor, a worn or thrown belt, a bad contactor or relay, a blown fuse, a loose connection. Often these land at or near the one-hour minimum plus a modest part. If your unit is alarming but the underlying fault is a single small component, you are usually in the least-expensive tier. The cost here is dominated by getting a tech to you, not by the repair itself.
Mid-range jobs. This is the broad middle. A refrigerant leak that has to be found, repaired, evacuated, and recharged is a good example, and it requires EPA-certified handling of the refrigerant, which is not optional. Defrost system problems, a failed defrost timer or valve, worn structure in the air-flow path, or electrical faults that take real diagnostic time all live here. These jobs combine a couple of hours of labor with parts that carry a meaningful cost, so the total climbs accordingly.
Major jobs. Compressor replacement and diesel engine work sit at the top. A compressor is an expensive part and a labor-intensive swap that includes recovering and recharging refrigerant and verifying the whole system afterward. Engine repairs on the unit's diesel, from a hard-starting or overheating condition to internal work, similarly stack significant labor on top of significant parts. These are the jobs where the invoice reflects both the price of the component and the hours it genuinely takes to do it right.
How Preventive Maintenance Lowers Your Real Cost
The cheapest reefer repair is the emergency you never have. Preventive maintenance (PM) contracts exist precisely because scheduled, planned service is dramatically cheaper than a 2 a.m. breakdown. A PM visit catches the worn belt before it snaps, the low refrigerant charge before it becomes a warm load, the tired battery before it strands you.

First, planned work happens on standard-rate time, not the after-hours premium. Second, and bigger, a well-maintained unit simply fails less often, and each failure it avoids is a potential rejected load. The Cost of NOT Fixing It
When you weigh a repair bill, weigh it against the alternative, because the alternative is rarely free. A reefer that cannot hold temperature puts the entire load at risk. Frozen or fresh freight that drifts out of its required range gets rejected at the dock, and a rejected load is not a discount, it is a total loss of that product plus the freight charge. That single number usually dwarfs any repair invoice.
Then there is downtime. A truck that cannot move is not earning, and a driver waiting on a fix is still on the clock. There are the softer costs too: a shipper who stops trusting you with temperature-sensitive freight, or a missed delivery window that cascades into the next load. Set against all of that, prompt repair is almost always the cheaper decision. The reefer that runs is the one that makes you money.
