New England winters are hard on transport refrigeration units. When temperatures drop below zero in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, the same reefer that ran flawlessly all summer can refuse to start, throw alarm codes, or quietly freeze the load it was supposed to protect. Winter is the peak breakdown season for TRUs, and most of the calls we take between December and March trace back to a handful of predictable cold-weather problems. Understanding what happens to a reefer in the cold helps drivers and fleet managers catch trouble early, prevent spoiled loads, and know when it is time to call a technician.
Why a Reefer Also Heats
The word "reefer" makes people think of cooling, but a transport refrigeration unit is really a temperature-control system that runs in both directions. Both Thermo King and Carrier Transicold units can run in cool mode or heat mode, and in a New England winter the heat mode matters just as much as cooling. Many loads that seem cold-tolerant are actually freeze-sensitive. Fresh produce, potatoes, bagged salad, eggs, beverages, canned goods, paint, pharmaceuticals, and many liquids will be ruined if they freeze in a trailer that is sitting at ten below.
To hold those loads at a safe setpoint, say 34 to 38 degrees, the unit has to add heat when the outside air is colder than the box. It does this by reversing the refrigeration cycle through hot gas or by using electric or engine-driven heat, depending on the model. The engine still runs, the compressor still turns, and the unit still cycles, but its job in January is to keep the load warm enough rather than cool enough. A reefer that cannot make heat in winter is just as much of an emergency as one that cannot cool in July.
Hard Cold Starts
The most common winter complaint is simple: the reefer will not start. A diesel TRU depends on heat of compression to ignite fuel, and in extreme cold that heat is harder to build. Several things gang up at once.
- Glow plugs and preheat. Most reefer diesels use glow plugs or an intake air heater to warm the combustion chamber before cranking. A worn glow plug, a failed glow relay, or a controller that shortcuts the preheat cycle leaves the engine trying to fire cold fuel into a cold cylinder, which means long cranking, white smoke, or no start at all.
- Weak batteries. Cold cuts battery capacity dramatically. A battery that tested fine in October may only deliver a fraction of its cranking amps at zero degrees, and the engine needs more cranking effort in the cold, not less. Corroded terminals and loose grounds make it worse.
- Thick oil and stiff components. Cold oil is thick, so the starter fights more drag while the battery is already weak. It is a losing combination on a hard morning.
When a unit cranks but will not catch, the cause is often a mix of marginal batteries and a preheat problem, not a single failed part. That is why a cold no-start is worth a proper diagnosis rather than repeated cranking that only drains the battery further.
Fuel Gelling and Waxing
Diesel fuel contains paraffin wax that stays dissolved when warm but begins to crystallize as temperatures fall. As fuel approaches its cloud point, those wax crystals cloud the fuel and start to plug the fuel filter. Push colder, past the gel point, and the fuel thickens enough to stop flowing entirely. A gelled filter starves the engine, and the unit shuts down or refuses to start.
The defenses are seasonal and worth taking seriously in the Northeast:
- Winter blend fuel. Reputable stations in cold regions sell a winter blend, often #1 diesel or a #1/#2 mix, that resists gelling at much lower temperatures than summer #2. Fueling at a busy truck stop that turns its tanks over quickly helps ensure you get current-season fuel.
- Anti-gel additives. A quality anti-gel treatment added before the fuel gets cold lowers the gel point and keeps wax crystals small. Additives cannot un-gel fuel that has already waxed up, so timing matters.
- Fuel/water separators. Water in the fuel freezes and blocks lines and filters. Draining the separator regularly keeps that water from becoming ice.
If a unit gels in the field, it usually needs to be warmed, the filter changed, and often the fuel treated or replaced before it will run reliably again. This is one of the most avoidable winter failures with a little preparation.
Battery Drain, Short-Cycling, and Block Heaters
Winter reefer operation creates a battery problem that sneaks up on people. When the outside temperature is close to the setpoint, the unit does not need to run its engine much, so on a continuous unit it may cycle on and off frequently, and a cycle-sentry style unit may sit shut down for long stretches. Each short run may not fully recharge the battery, while the controller, alarms, and preheat keep drawing power. Over a cold night of short-cycling, a marginal battery can slowly discharge until there is not enough left to crank, and the driver finds a dead unit in the morning.
A few things keep this from becoming a breakdown. Batteries should be load-tested going into winter and replaced before they fail, not after. Charging systems, belts, and alternators should be checked so every run actually puts energy back. Where a unit sits plugged in overnight, an engine block heater keeps the coolant and oil warm so starts are easy and less punishing on the battery. Keeping terminals clean and grounds tight is cheap insurance against hard-to-find cold-weather electrical gremlins.
Defrost, Coolant, and Frozen Drains
Cold, humid New England air loads the evaporator coil with frost. The unit runs defrost cycles to melt that frost so air keeps moving across the coil, but winter conditions can overwhelm the system. A defrost sensor or termination switch that fails, or a unit that cannot complete defrost, lets the coil ice over until airflow drops and temperature control suffers.
The meltwater from defrost has to go somewhere, and that is where condensate drains freeze up. Water draining out of the box hits sub-freezing air and refreezes in the drain tubes or pan. Blocked drains let ice build inside the unit, which can damage the coil, block airflow, and keep the box from holding temperature. Drain lines should be clear and directed so they shed water instead of forming an ice dam.
Finally, the engine's cooling system matters even in winter. Coolant that is old or diluted loses its freeze protection, and antifreeze that has degraded can gel or allow ice to form in the block and radiator, which cracks components and causes overheating once the engine works hard. A simple coolant test each fall confirms the protection level is right for a Northeast winter.
Prevention and When to Call a Tech
Most winter reefer failures are preventable. Going into the season, have the batteries load-tested, the charging system verified, glow plugs and preheat checked, coolant tested for freeze protection, belts and hoses inspected, and defrost function confirmed. Use winter-blend fuel, treat with anti-gel before the cold hits, drain the water separator, and keep drains clear. A short pre-trip warm-up and a habit of watching for alarm codes catches small problems before they strand a load on the interstate.
Call a technician when a unit will not start after normal preheat, throws repeated alarm codes, cannot hold or reach setpoint, ices over the coil, or shows signs of fuel gelling or low battery voltage. A freeze-sensitive load that is drifting toward 32 degrees is an emergency, not a wait-and-see.
