The compressor is the heart of any transport refrigeration unit. On a Thermo King or Carrier Transicold reefer, it draws in low-pressure suction vapor, compresses it into high-pressure discharge gas, and moves the refrigerant around the loop that pulls heat out of your box. When it fails, the unit stops holding setpoint and your load is on the clock. Replacing a reefer compressor is not a bolt-on swap. Done right, it is a controlled process governed by EPA refrigerant-handling rules and basic refrigeration physics. Here is what actually goes into it, and why the boring steps matter most.
Signs Your Reefer Compressor Is Failing
A failing compressor usually announces itself before it dies completely. The most common complaint is simple: the unit runs but won't cool, or it pulls down slowly and can't hold setpoint on a hot day. Gauges tell the story. A compressor that has lost pumping capacity often shows a high suction pressure and a low discharge pressure that won't spread apart the way they should, because the internals are worn and the machine can no longer build the pressure differential it needs.
Other warning signs include unusual noise, such as knocking, rattling, or a metallic grinding that points to failed bearings or a broken valve plate. Electrical faults are just as common on the reefer side. A chattering or pitted contactor, a compressor that hums and trips on overload, or one that repeatedly opens the high-pressure cutout can all signal a compressor or motor problem rather than a control glitch. On electric-standby scroll units and semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors, a shorted or grounded motor winding will drop the unit out entirely and may trip breakers or blow fuses.
Why Reefer Compressors Fail
Compressors rarely fail for no reason. The usual culprits are lubrication and contamination problems. Low refrigerant charge or a plugged expansion valve starves the compressor of the cool suction gas that carries oil back to it, so it runs hot and dry. Liquid refrigerant flooding back on start-up can wash out the oil or hydraulically shock the valves. Moisture that got into the system, often from a previous repair that skipped a proper evacuation, reacts with the oil and refrigerant to form acid that slowly eats the motor windings.
The worst outcome is a motor burnout. When a hermetic or semi-hermetic compressor motor shorts and burns, it dumps acid, carbon, and contaminated oil throughout the entire refrigeration system. This matters enormously, because you cannot simply bolt on a new compressor and walk away. If the acid and debris are left in the lines, condenser, and evaporator, they will kill the replacement compressor too. A burnout turns a compressor job into a full system cleanup.
The Replacement Process, Step by Step
On a Thermo King or Carrier Transicold unit, a correct compressor replacement follows a defined sequence. Skipping steps is how comebacks happen.
- Recover the refrigerant. Federal EPA regulations require recovering the R-404A, R-452A, or other refrigerant into a certified recovery machine and DOT-rated cylinder. Venting it is illegal, and the tech doing this must hold EPA 608 certification.
- Diagnose and pump down if possible. If the unit still holds a charge and has isolation valves, the refrigerant can be pumped down or recovered cleanly before opening the system.
- Remove the failed compressor. Disconnect the suction and discharge lines, electrical leads, and mounts, then pull the compressor. On a burnout, the old oil is inspected and smelled for acid to confirm how far the contamination spread.
- Install the new or reman compressor. Set the correct oil charge for the compressor and refrigerant. Reefer scroll and semi-hermetic units generally use POE (polyol-ester) oil with modern HFC blends, and POE is extremely hygroscopic, so it must not sit open to the air.
- Replace the filter-drier. A new liquid-line filter-drier goes in every time. On a burnout, a suction-line acid-scrubbing drier is added as well to capture acid and moisture the system left behind.
- Pressure test and leak check. The system is pressurized with dry nitrogen and checked for leaks before any vacuum is pulled, so a bad braze or fitting is caught before recharging.
- Evacuate to a deep vacuum. A vacuum pump pulls the system down and holds a deep micron vacuum, typically around 500 microns or better, verified with a micron gauge that holds when the pump is valved off.
- Recharge to spec. The unit is weighed in with the exact refrigerant charge from the manufacturer's data plate, then run and checked against target superheat and subcooling and discharge and suction pressures.
- Run test. The unit is cycled through cool, defrost, and if equipped heat, and watched pulling down to setpoint to confirm it holds under load.
Why Evacuation and a New Filter-Drier Matter
These two steps are where a rushed job goes wrong. Moisture is the enemy of any refrigeration system. Air and water vapor left inside will react with POE oil to form acids, freeze at the metering device and block flow, and cause the same corrosion that killed the last compressor. Pulling a deep micron vacuum boils off that moisture and removes non-condensable gases so the system starts clean and dry. Simply running the pump for a few minutes is not evacuation; the micron gauge has to reach the target and hold there.
The filter-drier is the system's kidney. It traps residual moisture and fine debris that a vacuum cannot remove. Reusing an old, saturated drier defeats the entire cleanup, which is why a fresh one goes in on every compressor change, and why a burnout gets an extra acid-removing drier on the suction line. Cutting either corner is the fastest way to buy a second compressor.
On-Site vs. Shop, and How Long It Takes
Many compressor replacements can be done on-site at a yard or truck stop when the unit is accessible and the weather cooperates. A clean swap on a straightforward unit is often a same-day job, though the evacuation and proper recharge take real time and cannot be safely rushed. A confirmed motor burnout takes longer, because the added flushing, extra driers, and follow-up oil and acid checks are what protect the new compressor. In some burnout cases a shop setting makes the cleanup easier and more thorough. An honest tech will tell you which situation you are in before starting.
