A transport refrigeration unit that won't start is one of the most stressful problems a driver or fleet manager can face, especially with a loaded trailer and a temperature-sensitive product on the clock. The good news is that most no-start situations fall into a small number of predictable causes. The single most useful thing you can do before touching anything is figure out which of two very different problems you actually have.
Won't Crank vs. Cranks But Won't Fire
Stand near the unit and hit start. Listen carefully. There are two distinct symptoms, and they point at completely different systems.
- Won't crank: You get a click, a single clunk, or dead silence. The starter is not spinning the engine over. This is almost always an electrical or safety-circuit problem.
- Cranks but won't fire: The starter spins the engine over normally, it turns and turns, but it never catches and runs. This is almost always a fuel or combustion problem.
Getting this one distinction right saves hours. A driver who reports "it just clicks" and a driver who reports "it cranks forever but won't catch" are describing two separate repairs, and knowing which one you have tells a tech what parts and tools to bring.
Won't Crank: The Electrical Side
When the starter won't turn the engine, the problem is upstream of combustion entirely. Diesel engines need a lot of amperage to crank, so anything robbing the starter of current will stop it cold. Common culprits include:
- Dead or weak battery: Reefer batteries live a hard life with vibration, cold, and deep cycling. A battery that reads low or is several years old is the number-one no-crank cause.
- Corroded or loose terminals: Green or white crust on the battery posts, or a loose ground strap, adds resistance and starves the starter. This is common and cheap to fix.
- Bad starter or solenoid: A single loud click with a good battery often means the solenoid is engaging but the starter motor isn't turning.
- Safety switches and lockouts: TRUs are full of protective circuits. A low oil pressure lockout, high coolant temperature switch, or an open door/tripped safety can prevent cranking by design. The unit is protecting itself, not failing.
- Blown fuses or a tripped controller: A displayed alarm code frequently points straight at the offending circuit.
The important idea here: if the engine won't turn over, adding fuel, bleeding lines, or changing filters accomplishes nothing. Chase the electrical path first.
Cranks But Won't Fire: The Fuel Side
When the engine spins freely but never catches, it is being denied one of the three things combustion needs: clean fuel, air-free fuel delivery, or enough heat to ignite. In cold-weather territory across Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, this is where most winter no-starts land.
- Empty or near-empty tank: Gauges lie, and reefer tanks are separate from the tractor. Confirm there is actually diesel in it before anything else.
- Gelled fuel: In cold snaps, untreated diesel forms wax that plugs the filter and lines. A unit that ran fine at night and won't fire at 5 a.m. in January is a classic gel story.
- Clogged fuel filter: A restricted primary or secondary filter starves the injection pump. Filters are a routine wear item and a frequent no-fire cause.
- Water in the fuel-water separator: Condensation and bad fuel put water in the system. Most units have a separator bowl that needs draining; too much water will stop combustion and damage injection components.
- Air in the fuel system: Air where fuel should be prevents the injection pump from building pressure. This almost always needs bleeding (more below).
- Failed lift pump or injection pump: If the pump can't move or pressurize fuel, the engine cranks dry.
- Glow plug or preheat failure: Many small diesels rely on glow plugs or an intake preheater to start cold. If the preheat cycle fails, a cold engine may crank without ever firing.
Why Running the Tank Dry Is Its Own Problem
Running a reefer completely out of fuel is not like a gas car, where you add fuel and drive off. When a diesel sucks the tank dry, it pulls air into the fuel lines, filter, and injection pump. Even after you add plenty of fuel, that trapped air keeps the pump from building the pressure needed to fire. The engine will crank and crank and stay dead until the air is removed. This is why "I just ran it low and now it won't start" is such a common call, and why simply topping off the tank often isn't enough to fix it.
Bleeding the Fuel System and Injection Work
Removing air from the system is called bleeding or priming. Depending on the unit, that can mean working a hand primer pump, cracking open a bleed screw or injector lines to let air escape while fuel pushes through, and cycling until clean, bubble-free fuel appears. It is straightforward for someone who has done it, but it is precise work: over-cranking to self-prime can overheat the starter, and injection-side diagnostics involve high pressures that demand the right procedure and care. Injection pump timing, injector testing, and lift pump pressure checks are firmly tech-level tasks, not roadside guesses.
Driver-Safe Checks vs. Tech-Level Work
There is real value in what a driver can safely check before calling for help. Doing these first often solves the problem or gives a tech a huge head start:
- Confirm there is fuel in the reefer tank, not just the tractor.
- Read and write down any alarm code on the microprocessor display.
- Look for obvious fuel leaks, puddles, or a fuel smell.
- Check the battery terminals for heavy corrosion or an obviously loose cable.
- Note whether it clicks (won't crank) or spins but won't catch (won't fire).
- If equipped and you know how, drain the water separator bowl.
What is not driver work: bleeding fuel lines, cracking injectors, replacing pumps, jumping safety circuits, or overriding a lockout. Those either require training or exist to protect the engine from damage, and bypassing them can turn a small repair into a major one.
Start-Stop vs. Continuous Run
One more thing worth understanding: TRUs run in either continuous mode, where the diesel idles nonstop to hold temperature, or start-stop (cycle-sentry) mode, where the unit shuts the engine off once setpoint is reached and automatically restarts as needed. If a start-stop unit fails to auto-restart, it can look like a no-start when the underlying cause is the same fuel or electrical fault, just discovered when the unit tried to cycle back on rather than at a manual start. Knowing which mode the unit runs in helps explain why it died when it did.
Most reefer no-starts come down to a handful of causes, and sorting won't-crank from won't-fire is more than half the battle.
